Babywearing
has become a 'growing' trend and we at Maya Wrap are thrilled to see more Moms
and Dads keeping their little ones close and growing together! Well before it
was a trend, we recognized the benefits of keeping your baby close during those
first impressionable years! Wearing your baby in a baby sling or baby carrier
has several benefits:
Less Crying - Babies who are carried cry less on average than those that are
not. Research has shown that babies who are carried cry (on average) 43% less
overall and 54% less during the evening hours (1).
Smarter Babies - Babies spend more time in a "quiet, alert state" when carried -
the ideal state for learning. When carried, your baby sees the world from where
you do, instead of the ceiling above his crib or people's knees from a
stroller. This extra stimulation benefits brain development.
Emotional Development - Babies are able to develop a sense of security and trust
when they are carried. They are more likely to be securely attached to their
care-giver/s (2) and often become independent at an earlier age (3).
Physical Development - By being close to your body's rhythms, baby "gets in
rhythm" much more quickly. Research has shown how this helps newborns
(especially premature babies) to adapt to life outside the womb (4).
Helps with Post Partum Depression - Babies who are not held need more verbal
interaction and eye contact, just to be reassured that you're there. Moms who
may suffer from Post Partum depression will find that carrying their baby is a
great way to connect with her (and provide stimulation too) without the "burden"
of having to interact (5). Of course your baby is "right there" to enjoy
whenever you feel like snuggling, kissing or talking. This is by no means a cure
or solution for Post Partum Depression, always seek counsel from your physician
first.
Eases the strain - Carrying your baby in a sling eases the strain on babies
spine and your back!

Our
Slings allow for discreet breastfeeding whenever and wherever you may be. The
wide tail creates the perfect nursing cover or blanket and even has a pocket for
your keys, cell phone, a diaper, or nursing supplies. All of our products fit
easily into a diaper bag or purse.

Part of being comfortable and confident when babywearing is selecting a carrier
that is right for you. There are several things to consider when choosing a
sling or carrier. For instance, your lifestyle, your baby's weight, the amount
of time in a day you plan to use it, importance of having a nursing cover,
pocket for keys or diaper, and many other things. See our choosing guide below
for more guidance!
Cool: All of our baby carriers are 100% cotton and are comfortable in hot
weather. Our fabrics look the same on both sides, eliminating the need for
sewing two fabrics together to hide the wrong side of a fabric. One layer of
fabric is cooler than two layers and allows for better air flow to help keep
your baby from becoming over-heated.
No Bulk: Our carriers (except the Lightly Padded Sling) have no padding. The
Lightly Padded Sling has a small amount of padding in the shoulder. This means
all of our carriers are not bulky. They fit easily into your diaper bag or purse
when you are on the go. The Maya Tie uses slightly more fabric but will still
fit nicely into a larger diaper bag or backpack.
Comfortable: Our Slings distribute baby’s weight across your back for a
comfortable, secure fit. Wearing two MamaBaby slings allows you to distribute
baby’s weight over both shoulders for extra comfort. The Maya Tie distributes
baby’s weight over both shoulders and your hips for ultimate comfort. It is
excellent for heavier children or babywearing for long periods of time. Unlike
other woven cottons, our hand-loomed fabrics "give" for a more comfortable fit
while still being supportive.
Versatile: All of our baby carriers are usable in a variety of positions for
newborns and toddlers. Our slings grow with your baby over time. Wearing two
MamaBaby slings makes it possible to wear your newborn in a high “burp”
position. The Maya Tie can also be used for a very comfortable and secure back
carry.
Adjustable: All of our products come in a range of sizes and are
fully-adjustable, ensuring a perfect and secure fit every time! Our carriers can
be tightened over a wide range. Frequently both parents can share one carrier
even if they are different sizes.
Discreet: You can breastfeed in all of our baby carriers. For those who prefer
to breastfeed discreetly, the tails of our slings can be used as a cover up.
When selecting a sling, if nursing coverage is not important to you, you may
prefer to select a size smaller. The smaller size will have a shorter fabric
tail past the rings.

How
soon can I start wearing my baby?
Most newborns can be worn right away. If your baby has any health challenges, is
low tone, or premature, you should discuss babywearing with your health care
practitioner.
Will I spoil my baby if I wear him/her too much?
No. In fact, research has shown that babies are quickly able to develop a sense
of security and trust when they are carried. They are more likely to be securely
attached to their care-giver/s and often become independent at an earlier age.
What if my baby is fussy in the carrier?
If you are confident that your baby is not upset due to hunger or other
variables, and is clearly unhappy while in the carrier, begin by trying
different positions. Some newborns prefer to be held vertically versus laying
down. Try walking around indoors or outside while wearing it or swaying in
place. Soon your baby will recognize the sling as a place of comfort and
security. Often babies like to fall asleep in the carrier. Always keep a close
watch on your baby, even when sleeping, to ensure they are getting proper
airflow.
How should I position the baby when breastfeeding in a sling?
Our slings allow for convenient nursing. Please see our
video instructions here.
Always keep a close watch on your baby while nursing and never use a nipple
shield while nursing your baby in a carrier.

Our products come in a variety of beautiful 100% cotton hand loomed
fabrics.(With the exception of our MamaBaby which is made of 100% cotton
interlock.) Hand loomed fabrics are cooler, more breathable than machine woven
fabrics, and have just the right amount of give. Hand loomed fabrics are
incredibly durable and extremely soft which eliminates the need for bulky
padding or double layers of fabric that can overheat baby. Whether it's our
beautiful burnt orange fabric for the Fall, or our happy Apple Green fabric for
the spring, you'll want one for every outfit and season!

Are the dyes used in your fabrics safe?
We have a certificate from our manufacturer stating that the dyes used to make
Maya Wrap Baby Carriers do not contain any copper, nickel, lead, mercury,
cadmium, cobalt, aluminum, arsenic, chromium or any other poisonous substance.
Are your products fairly traded?
It is Maya Wrap company policy that all those involved in the production of Maya
Wraps are paid a fair wage in the local context, have healthy and safe working
conditions, and are at least 16 years of age.
We recently had an independent 3rd party verify that our manufacturer is
following fair trade practices and providing a good working environment for its
employees.
Do you have a free baby sling pattern?
Yes! We believe that all babies deserve to be carried and have made the pattern
for our Original Maya Wrap Sling available for your personal use.
Sew your own baby sling!

Have you ever had a recall or investigation?
Yes. In 2007 a ring broke on one of our slings. The baby did not fall and there

After much testing and research we released all of our slings for sale.
